I've faced all the most common challenges that UX and design teams face. If you're struggling to drive growth or build an efficient organization, I can help redesign your product, processes or organization.
I establish the right tools and approach to get to market quickly, including Gen AI.
I create environments for people to do the best work of their lives.
I leverage business and product strategy to create products customers love.
I scale systems and teams that deliver consistently and maintain quality.
I've distilled how I lead UX organizations into four high-level principles. Read more...
Lead with a vision of a preferred future while connecting day-to-day work with strategy.
Give the team agency to do their best work while prioritizing collaboration with partners and peers.
Create operational efficiencies and demonstrate the business impact of design.
Pursue excellence in craft with a focus on open sharing and user-centered design practices.
Over the years, I've developed a playbook for handling design org dynamics, including:
Community involvement is an important part of how I lead and I encourage my teams to contribute to the wider UX community.
I wrote a book called Articulating Design Decisions that has become a core part of learning and development in the UX community. As a result, I'm often invited to facilitate workshops and coach other teams on design leadership practices.
These opportunities make me a better leader, give me an advantage in networking and recruiting, and help me stay on top of industry trends and best practices.
I wrote a book with O'Reilly media on the importance being able to effectively explain our design decisions to stakeholders in order to get the support we need to have an impact.
In this podcast episode, I discuss how designers can provide the most value to their partners in the business and avoid being labeled as inflexible or slowing down the product team.
In this interview, I discuss the importance of demonstrating the value of design to the business in an objective way in order to earn a seat at the table.
In this conference talk, I share stories from my career about how our roles as leaders is about collaboration, communication, and making other people successful.
Tom at his core is a people-first leader. He cares deeply for people and helping them grow. He gives trust easily and expects the same of his teams. He has a way of putting people at ease. He pushed me to be my best and always approached feedback conversations with proactivity, candor, and respect. Tom's leadership style creates a culture of trust. I've only had 1 other leader in my entire 25+ year career with whom I found myself being as open and upfront as Tom.
Tom is an exceptional design team leader and manager, and I consider myself very lucky to have worked with him for several years at Indigo. He is approachable and honest and truly cares about the professional development and wellbeing of his direct reports. As a leader, he inspires his team with his genuine personality and sense of humor, which is coupled by a drive for excellence which he nurtures in others.
They say don't chase your ideal job, chase your ideal leader. What I've learned from Tom goes beyond simply design. He's pushed me to communicate better, influence smarter, and lead with clarity. He's helped me to grow as a designer. But the real impact is how much I've grown not only as a teammate, but as a leader too. If you ever get the chance to work with Tom, take it. Jobs come and go, but leaders like him are rare.
I can honestly say that Tom is the best boss I've ever had. He puts his heart into everything he does, whether it be... livening up the slow moments at the beginning of a meetings with ways to connect, or a keen eye to smoothing out organizational needs. There is a certain way that he invites people to be a part of decision making that is a type of leadership that I aspire to. He excels in leadership and design alike, and would be an asset to any leadership team.
